So now I work in my college's computer center (I've been an unofficial employee all year, but now I'm actually getting paid. Very Happy). I have access to old boxes and such, so I think it's time to pull one out, install *nix, and when I get my new apartment, get some of this shizzle:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/custom/

So my question is, what build/distro should I load onto it?
THEIF! Laughing I use http://www.no-ip.com for my server http://pezzi.no-ip.info, which I run off my PC to mess around with it (hence it only being online for 5 hours a day). It's free and works even if you have a dynamic IP. w00t Very Happy

As for the distro, I've heard Ubuntu is good for beginners and n00bs such as yourself. Just Joking
Are you kidding? Ubuntu is HORRIBLE for thinks like server hosting. I was thinking Debian or Gentoo.

Edit: I would need something like this then:
http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/plus_dynamic_dns.html
if you are adventurous (and know in fair amount of detail the hardware in the computer - CPU mainly, you'll need to know the sound card if you want sound) go with Gentoo

@Kerm: I wouldn't say Ubuntu is horrible for server hosting. A little known search enginge called Google runs their machines on Ubuntu Wink

If I went with Gentoo, would I have to conpile it myself, or could I just use a precompiled distro? And how difficult would it be to get the AMP part of LAMP on it?

In gentoo, you compile EVERYTHING (which makes it faster, and smaller) - the only exceptions are apps that take forever to compiler (FireFox and OpenOffice are the only 2 binaries i can think of...)

To get the AMP part is very easy: you just "emerge -pv apache" then add the features (such as PHP, MySQL) that you want (it has a list) to your USE and then do "emerge -av apache" making sure everything looks right before telling it to install
Fair enough. And what about some kind of GUI so I don't lose my mind trying to vi httpd.conf? Oh, and what about some CPanelish type thing?

Idk, thats up to you to get Razz --> http://packages.gentoo.org <--

or you could just configure it via Gnome's Gedit or some other text editor rather than using VI.....
/me's mind boggles. Let's try the other road: how about AMP + cpanelish on Ubuntu?

Getting a CPanel-ish on Gentoo wouldn't be any harder than on Ubuntu. The problem is that I don't KNOW of any (CPanel costs money $$$ and is "accessed" just as a normal PHP web site - so it would just get drag/dropped into /var/www (same with phpmyadmin)
http://www.biztology.com/download/ Smile Free version.
/me likes phpMyAdmin.

also, if you are really interested in having a server go with BSD instead of Linux
Meh, I happen to like the Linux idea, I think I'll stick with that for now. Smile

There won't be any difference between BSD and Linux - both will spawn threads just as fast as each other, and aside from that, the kernal won't have any effect. Both platforms use the same libraries and apps anyway, you just have to watch out for thread spawning from Apache (which is why Mac OS X sucks at being a web server)

As for Cube Panel: Neither ubuntu or gentoo will have an "easy" install for that as you have to "purchase" it from their site (yes, i noticed the free one, but it still goes thru an order-like format) - but that doesn't mean you can't download it and install it yourself - thats not hard Razz

Wuss Razz
C'mon, I just want to get it working relatively fast. Smile
Sorry to bump this. I got Gentoo all set up, so now I'm working on dling and installing Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

Yup, when I move into the new apartment I'll try to make the move as seamless as possible.
