i have been playing around with my ti 83 plus...hoping i could and a backlight...so i went to ticalc.org and look at there hardware section.

while reading i came across a IR link...which enables your calc to control or send things over a wireless conection.

is there anyone who has this and does it actually work? and can somebody help me on how to put a backlight in my ti 83 plus.

IR links do work, just the same as a regular link cable

You might add that it's not the same as WiFi and the range is pretty shoddy...
Not to mention that it takes some fair electronics knowledge and soldering skill/experience to create.

you could get by with the ol' twist and tape tho, it would be ugly, but it should still work....

as for the electronics knowledge, just enough to be able to read a schematic, which isn't really that hard...
Eh, that would be REALLY ugly taped up.

Thats why someone invented project boxes Wink
And breadboards. But still, where would he get a PIC programmer?

A pre-programmed kit Razz
I don't know if those are availible from there anymore (correct me if I am wrong).

I am thinking about this, and I have a PIC programmer the last time I checked
I have access to several, not to mention a bunch of PLD programmers. Woot for being an EE.
JDM Programmer: http://www.jdm.homepage.dk/newpic.htm (Parts can be bought at Jameco.com
IC-Prog: http://www.ic-prog.com/index1.htm
PIC 16F84A: http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&productId=193332&pa=193332PS

Backlight:

The problem was technical know-how, which I frankly doubt BKing0 has (no offense intended, I just doubt you're an EE) Smile
JameCo is good, and Mouser is also good. I recently discovered Express Electronix.
I use to use Mouser; it's only good for finding rarely used components, more of a specialty-type store; it's too expensive for general purchases.
I found RGB LEDs for only $1.75 ($1.35 if you get 10+) at this place:

Can you get white light out of them?
Indeedy. I tried them with 3 potentiometers, and I found they had an excellent color range. Quite bright, too - blue is 600mcd, green is 800, and red is 1000.
Wow...the RGB LED's I have are brighter, but you can't have all 3 colors on at once (and they're cheaper)

What are you going to use them for?
My LED clock, and possibly messing around with the color backlighting again.
I have a color LED alarm clock that I bought at a Discovery Store years ago...it's awesome:
