Well, stuff isn't hard-coded, like it was in 1.3. For example, all of the SQL commands were hard-coded for MySQL, now there's an abstraction layer, so all you have to do is write a "driver" of sorts for your database. Of course MySQL is still supported, and there should be support for PostgreSQL and MSSQL.

Yeah, they are using DBI I think. Sort of an API abstraction layer.

It will be awsome. People will be running MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS_SQL, Oracle, and even Sybex will be supported.

As for us, we will be sticking with MySQL becuause it is free, proven technology that is more stable and outbenches PostgreSQL. We have never had any serrious problems with mysql!

Besides, its fast!!!

Only problem with MySQL: cryptic eror messages. Who came up with the idea that showing a page full of code will help people figure out what the error is?

I don't see any problems with "cryptic" error messages, but you could use your own error catching code and thereby your own non-cryptic messages.

If you don't understand MySQL error messages, you'd be completely lost in the new job I will be starting soon, which is working almost exclusively with databases (MS-SQL specifically). SQL is relatively straightforward, and the error messages are quite easy to understand if you understand basic SQL, I'm no guru but I can get around.

Yeah...I believe Matt wrote his own abstraction layer of sorts (Matt is the main PHP developer, without him Invision wouldn't exist!)

Either they left some files out of hte download, or they dropped support for all databases except MySql in 2.0.0PF4 :(

THe only way MySql error messages could get any clearer is if it fixed the errors itself. a hint for debugging a page full of errors:
start at the top, and just focus on the first one, dont look much at the others. once the first one is fixed, there is a likely chance that several others will fix as well, because errors have a tendancy to build off one another.
