Have you thought about using cellular automata tiles to reduce 8 byte sprites to 2 bytes? I'd be interested to see how they work out in an actual game.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the process, so it would take some time to test and impliment. Text looks like the big RAM killer, and my compression doesn't seem to affect it much.
