I've been trying to make sense of all the calc shells and ROM versions out there lately. To be specific, I'm putting together a webpage to help clear this up for calc newbs but I'm in need of some information myself.

Basically, I want it to look sort of like this place but for ROMs and Shells. For the most part I can't make heads or tails out of which shells are active, what the latest versions are, whice ROMs they support, etc. It's a ton of info to comb through.

I've got TI-82 covered and it looks like everybody is using nostub for TI-86, so I won't need many details there for a while. Can you guys help me fill in the gaps with the remaining models (probably starting with 83+)? Anything related to the following is helpful, but really I'll take anything I can get... Cool

* Calc model's status (active, discontinued, obscure, etc)
* Basic hardware info (flash? RAM? USB? LCD size?)
* How to get calc's ROM version
* Known ROM versions
* Shells (old, new, upcoming, etc)
* Versions for active shells (and what ROMs are supported)

That's a bit too much flash memory for the plain plus. You might confuse it with the SE.

ticalc.org's Calculator Basics page might help a little.

Will you be including information on kernels as well? I could help you out on the 68k family (and I'm sure Sir Robin could help even more).

Isn't Venus fairly popular?

Ya'know, I had a essay written up about shells that was going to be put as an article by Ticalc.org. I just sort of left it on my comp. Maybe I'll upload it later...

Yeah, kernels will work too. I'll probably check with DWedit for the full story on Crunchy.

Does MirageOSs for both 83+ and 84+ at once or is it two different versions? Any info on TI-73 will help too, it seems to have some good games out too lately.

Please realize most of what I'm listing for Shells is what I remember from a few years ago, so please post the needed corrections with TI-model, and I will go back and edit my post above with them.

I am almost certain there is only one version of MirageOS (not 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, I mean there is not a separate one for each model.)

On the 83 series, can't you access the OS version from the Mem menu?

The only shell for the TI-73 is Mallard, look it up as I don't know much about it.

'Tis an excellent guide though; I refer to it all the time for one thing or another. Mostly for ram lookups.

Guillaume H approached me around Christmas 03 when I had questions about porting Robot War to the new TI-82s. This list is similar, but I'm trying to make it very comprehensive (for popular shells anyway) and possibly with some calc pics to match. Sort of like the Datamath calculator museum. I've got a ~partial version finished and ready to publish very soon.

Crunchy is the most popular around my school. Followed only by Mirage for the 83/84 series. Ion is not seen anymore.

This would be great if you manage to pull it off. I only have a second hand familiarity with most of the shells that are out there. My FAQ page has lists of shells, mostly just names copied out of the listings in ticalc.org's archive, and most of them were never used by a significant number of people. Here's possibly relevant stuff that I can piece together off the top of my head:

82: assembly was cracked late in its life, was never significant. I think the major shells were Ash and CrAsh.
83: Ion was the big one, I don't even remember what was used prior to Ion, essentially every shell made afterwards was Ion compatible.
83+: Ion carried over until MirageOS came out and rapidly took dominance, CrunchyOS is the only other one you ever really hear about.
84+: Just uses the 83+ stuff.
85: ZShell of course, all later shells were ZShell compatible. Usgard seemed to become popular when it came out but I doubt it ever actually surpassed ZShell.
86: Asm program are never writen under shells, though a plethora of imitation-shell programs emerged to provide program menus and such. All can be run using the catalog's Asm() command, including the "shells". I never really kept track of which ones were popular, I myself stuck with the smallest one I could find because I didn't care about the other features that most of them were bloated with.
92: Fargo
92+/89: DoorsOS dominated for awhile, then stopped updating and was replaced by competing shells PreOS and UniversalOS. Note also the HW2 patch.
89Ti/V200: By the time the 89Ti and AMS 3.x came out, UniversalOS stopped updating, leaving only PreOS. HW3 patch replaces HW2 patch.

People kept asking about Ion and DoorsOS for a long time after they were essentially replaced, because they had been written in to massive numbers of game readme/documentation files.

Wow: it's tough to see Crunchy as the first one...

[aside] At my old highschool, I used to be the only person who brought in all the new programs and shared them with my friends (kinda still am by giving them to my sister and friends that still go to HS). They'd then share it with theirs and so on.
I actually did an experiment once and added in worthless pieces of code like

Code:
If 1=2:Version 1

Code:
If 1=2:Version 2
and etc (up to 23) and gave one to each of my friends. A few weeks later, I checked my friends' friends and see who got what from who. I was able to guess the path each program took by who I knew were friends with who.
I also did a version that ++ed an obscure variable (something from the Finance Menu) everytime you ran the game. That way I could check how many times someone played it. Some numbers astounded me (well into the early thousands!). Quite interesting stuff.

Anyways, I tried inroducing CrunchyOS into the gene pool but people were too Miraged to care about it.

it could also be that some people actually used those variables...and stored big numbers in them....well, i guess not...

Would KerNO be deserving of a mention?
