I figured it would be a good idea to add some kind of mini-game area in the 3rd level--to break up the repetition. I'd like to have up to three of them. After you play a game, you can either convert your casino chips to gold and EXP, or play again to double your winnings. So you get 1 token for the 1st win, 2 tokens for the next, then 4, then 8, and so on. Lose, and you lose all your tokens.

Image Shuffle
You're shown 3 pictures of characters of the game. You watch the pictures get shuffled very quickly, then they're covered up with a big "?." Guess where the characters are correctly and you number of tokes doubles. The difficulty goes up with the number of tokens you are risking. Of course, if the player hasn't learned the character's names, they're screwed.

Image Snapshot
Just like the first one, except the images are flashed on-screen for a very short time. Then it asks "where is [insert name]?" Pick the right one to win.

Piñata
A key-mashing game. Press left & right as fast as you can to hit the piñata. If you get enough hits before the time limit, the piñata breaks open and you win tokens and/or items.

Target Wak-a-Mole
Targets pop up from the floor and you press the up/down/left/right to hit them. Pressing too late does nothing. If you hit a certain percentage of targets you win. As usual, difficuly goes up if you're loaded with tokens.

Any more ideas?

I think pressing [<] and [>] really fast is a bit hard because both keys are so close together.
Maybe [2nd] and [>]?

The games should get harder as you play too. For example, the number of times you have to hit the keys should increase.

I don't think hitting right and left is too hard.

Maybe for the pinata one, the faster you go could also increase the damage of each hit.

[edit]

What about some kind of arcade game too? There's already a sprite routine, so they wouldn't add much space.

Okay here's another one. How about one where something chases you around the level, and you have to avoid it for a certain time. For more difficulty, it would move at a faster rate. (Would need some surfaces to hide behind for this one).

I think what would be cooler is the reverse of that - you're chasing something that's hiding behind surfaces.

Ah, even better! :biggrin: It would be kind of funny to have him chasing a chicken or something like the Rocky movie. I could even use the chicken sprite from Chicken Shoot.

How about pong? That one's a sure-fire hit and very small.

I'll spice that one up a bit... How about while playing Pong as usual, there is a coin (or a bag with a dollar sign on it, etc.) on the table that you collect when the ball passes through it, prompting a new one to pop up elsewhere. That way, the player could rack up extra points, and the added distraction of trying to "reach" the bag (provided that the speed of the paddle's movement can alter the angle of reflection) can put the player out of commission. Laughing

Alright, I'll probably have to just use a dollar sign, but that can definately go in. Cool

I did some of concept grahics for the target whack-a-mole. There's a + target and a - target, that affect your score accordingly, so the player can't just mash buttons. Thanks to an odd side-effect of CrASH_MAN's tilemapper, you can make it look like they're shooting up from the floor using very few instructions. I might start on this one first.

* Image Shuffle
* Snapshot
* Target whack-a-mole
* Pinata
* Catch the object
* Money pong

Any others?

Okay, so far the arcade microgames are played in that 4x10 rectangle, and rest of the casino/arcade is in a larger area with some potted plants scattered around for the "chase" game. Pong got me thinking of those oldschool DOS games, so I though it would be interesting to go with a ASCII art theme. Then it could have others like meteors, space invaders, fast tunnel, snake, etc. The new compression as working over x2 better than the old one Neutral, so there should be room for all this.

Pong!

Shuffle!

This pong stuff is taking more room than I expected. Would anybody be horribly disappointed if pong was the only ASCII game in there? So far, the priority is going: pong, targets, shuffle, and catch the [object].

Does anybody know if there's a text flag that writes the large font to the graph_mem instead of directly to the LCD? I've got things flicker-free so far, but at the cost of more RAM than I care to admit.
