I need one of the admins to ban this user due to spam. 'Couldn't find the perma-ban option.

Done. I think it any member who posts spam like that on their first post should be banned, no questions asked.

I agree. Luckily our forum rules seem to permit us to do whatever we want.

Why can't DigiTan ban? He should have plenty of authority to do so being a global moderator.

We can suspend posting ability indefinately, and suspend the member's account for a certain number of days, which is just as good.

Never had to use it though...

He can. You do it through the warning system. When warning him, select the option to disable posting forever.

(too late. Alexrudd beat me. Question: does this actually put the user in Banned member category?)

No it doesn't. You need to do it through the AdminCP to put them there.

That will be fixed in IPB 2.1.x where we have more granular control of what user groups have what admin rights in the ACP. Just give me a month or two please.

Ah, okay. So "Disable indefinitely" is the same as banning. Yeah, it's never really come up before, so when it did, I was all: "what tha?"

Nah, it doesn't give the cool "Banned" status, but it does stop them from posting, which solves the problem anyway.

I see DarkerLine exterminated another one - any reason why we suddenly get a bunch of these idiots?

My guess is because we don't have a working gd2 library we can't enable the more advanced login security required for user registration, and someone has probably found a way to program registration around the generic image rendering method currently used.

One other thing I wanted to mention...if people can't register using a valid email address so they get the email to validate their account, then they don't deserve to have a validated account. The sending of mail to validate their account works correctly.

Indefinitly is definitly better for first time spammers trying to sell spyware and or post ads.

Let's post in our rules that all people not validated in 30 days will be purged.

I that. I also like the idea of insta-banning accounts that solicit ads in their opening post.

I spoke this over with AlienCC and we think that the upgrade that will be done to the forums will fix many problems.

I have updated the apache config file to prevent the following from loading if a user is not on our site (referer set to http://www.unitedti.org or http://unitedti.org):

(gif|jpg|png)

This should hopefully cut down on spambots some more, and people trying to leech bandwidth. Are there any other file extensions I should add to this list?

I assume there are no others by now. I am going to lock this topic to close it.
