Put forth your best image software and break out those layers, people, because we are now accepting submissions for the official United-TI Shirt Design Contest! We're looking for an original and creative design (preferably expressing United-TI in some way) that will appear on future UTI apparel, and will also allow its users to proudly exhibit their favorite calc-based forum wherever they go. The winner will have his unique design placed on upcoming merchandise, and he'll also receive a free t-shirt depicting his victorious craft. So that we can get it out to that person as soon as possible, we'll ask that the winner send to AlienCC (via PM) the appropriate shipping name and address—plus the shirt size if that needs to be specified—after the announcement is made.

All submissions should follow these simple guidelines:

  • Preferred format: *.PSD (PhotoShop Document) – VECTOR GRAPHICS PREFERRED
  • Maximum size: 10MB (10,485,760 bytes)
  • Minimum resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch)
We will be accepting e-mailed submissions at jon.r.johnson (at) gmail.com up until 23:59 (GMT-7) on August 20th, 2006. That's two weeks. Now, get started if you want all that extra time for adding final touches! In the end, it may make all the difference. Wink

Yay! Just what I wanted. Someone must have read my comment about the shirt designs. Smile

I don't have Photoshop though. Would any other formats be acceptable? I do have Flash, which does vector graphics...

By the way, whose email is jon.r.johnson?

@axcho: AlienCC.

So once the new design comes out, the old ones will be "Collector's Edition"?

Only if they're being silk-screened. If they're using a hot-transfer method, you can use any color, since it's just an inkjet-printed sheet ironed onto the shirt.

Then you'd probably be better suited with SVG or (E)PS than some $599 format.

What's the point of asking for vector graphics if you want them in .psd form?

Let me clarify that the designs should be made in whatever program is available to you that can produce the best quality images, and PSD is a popular extension that is characteristic of said quality (especially since the DPI is so easily regulated). Vector-based images are prime, however, when it comes down to having a non-lossy behavior during an image resize, so if you can successfully (re-)produce your design using vectors, it would be all the more valuable to us when we apply them to the products.

So, to recap what I just said, feel free to use PSD or vector-based image formats—whatever ensures excellent picture quality—just so long as you are within the guidelines as stated at the beginning of this topic. By the way, you still have plenty of time to draw up an outline and implement it if you want to be in this contest (and your design to shine)!

[EDIT]

Let me also add that the reason for the minimum DPI is expressed here.

I thought .psd supported vector graphics. Or you can make them in photoshop, but not save them as such?

Unfortunately, PSD is a bitmapped file format that also supports layers.

Adobe Illustrator (EPS) and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) both can store vectors.

Uh, .psd *does* store vector graphics. Any text you put in one is vectorized. That's how you can save it, then open it back up and edit what the text says. Using the pen tool you can create fancy vectors. You know the adds at the bottom of the page with the uti logo on them? It's vector graphics, which I created from the little icon that shows next to the url in your browser. the image I created was only 5 inches wide, though i'm sure the calendar that's advertised has the image much larger. I can stretch it to however big without distortion, but it's still stored in a .psd

I agree it stores a bitmap version of the image as well. If you create a text box on one computer with a fancy font, save, move to another computer without that font, then open the file, photoshop will tell you that i can't find the font used and will ask you if you want to rasterize the text or leave it as a vector. (leaving it as a vector requires that you select a replacement font that exists on the current system)

I'd assume because it's a waste of time, a sucker's going to click on it anyways.

Fallen Ghost is a robot?

Oh, and EPS or AI are the best formats for vectorized images. However, even though PSD rasterizes the vectors you draw, we're not printing an outdoor sign here... it should be fine.

I reckon even a large enough JPG or PNG should get the job done...

I'll make one, but I can't assure it's quality. I'll use my Gimp skills to their fullest.

@Goose: I'm not complaining, I just want this thread to get back on topic.

To avoid the confusion regarding who posted what, let's use the button rather than make a new post complaining about it. Thanks.

@Darth Android: Everywhere I looked, PSD was claimed to have no vector storage capabilities, save but the text. Where did you find that information so that I can read up on it?
