I know for sure that PSD utilizes vector based graphics.

The GIMP can export as PSD. Please use this.

Which is why I'm asking, so that I can *know* it, too. Wink

@Darth Android: Everywhere I looked, PSD was claimed to have no vector storage capabilities, save but the text. Where did you find that information so that I can read up on it?

I found my information in the toolbox on the side. Anything I draw with the pen tool /anchors always stretches without distortion or pixelation. I can go back after saving and closing photoshop and move anchors around and make changes. I assume this is vector based because if it wasn't, how'd it know where my lines and anchors were after i saved and closed photoshop and how was i able to edit them? I agree PSD isn't the best for vectors, but it does support them in some format. (Personally I recommend Sodipodi + SVG for vector graphics)

The only problem I know of is gimp loading vector graphics in .psd files incorrectly, at least for me.

But will there really be any scaling if the source files are 10"x10"?

Depends. If I use 10"x10" with 600dpi, it'll probably be scaled down. if I use 10"x10" with 10 dpi, it'll be scaled up.

That's because it doesn't.

You can argue all you want that text and the pen tool are vectors but that doesn't change the fact that .psd doesn't support vector graphics. Look up the definition of vector if you don't believe me.

well, using the definition here [wikipedia.org], "Vector graphics or geometric modeling is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and polygons to represent images in computer graphics."

Using a pen tool you can create points, curves and polygons, which form images, and a psd is computer graphic (or one when rendered, anyways). I stand by my claim.

I have now looked through enough articles written by Adobe to be convinced that the PSD
format, although mostly referred to as raster-based, does support vector graphics as well.

Why not try it? Make a vector graphics file in photoshop and save it as psd, then load it.

I don't own a copy of PhotoShop.

But can you then take the graphics and enlargen them infinitely with no loss of quality? How about shrinking them? You should be able to shrink an image to 1px, save it, exit, openup, and enlargen back to it's original form.

With vector graphics the shapes and such are stored with high precision coordinates, so you can both scale them well and modify them with accuracy.

It was my understanding that there were no points stored but instead mathematical formulas (for example a circle would be stored as the radius, and distance from top left)

There is something else that needs clarifying: the final moment your submissions are to be accepted is at 23:59 on August 20th, which is immediately followed by midnight on the 21st. When it becomes Monday (following the Monday on the 14th), then it will already have been too late to get your design entered into the contest! The starter post in this topic has been edited to make it easier to remember.

So, on that note: there is just about one week to go! The concluding lineup should be very entertaining. Smile
