Profile:
Settlement of the area presently known as Oceanside can be traced back to the early 19th century. Early colonialists were drawn to the region's vast pastures and established numerous rancheros and fisheries. As the industrial age was ushered in, gold mining and longer shipping lanes earned Oceanside the motto "the Greatest Port in the West."

Presently, the urban cluster is home to 1,500,000 citizens and has a land area of 260 square miles (673 square km). The city retains its pre-modern reputation as a major seaport. The region is also famous for high-speed trucking lanes. The Oceanside district has many well-known landmarks, including Crab's Cove, and the Oceanside suburban district. The upscale Navy City district is known as a modern and cultured setting with a wide array of item shops, restruants, and inns.

Wild, shifting terrain repelled modern development here for centuries. Since ancient times, the dense forests have bred strange and gigantic insects. Swarms of giant wasps easy account for the region’s isolation. Even plant growth is accelerated, making maps of Grand Grove perpetually out-of-date.

A small settlement exists on the only pocket of stable terrain. Herb items are provided by the leaves of rare flowers. The natives are hostile to any outsiders caught trampling these plants, but will open their garden, shop, and inn to those trustworthy. Early explorers spoke of a rare honey said to give superhuman abilities. However, the foolhardy have been killed by insect swarms in search of the legend. Other hazards include spikes from calcified tree remains, giant slugs near Floral Fairway, and deep waters in the Great Lakefront.

At 14,410 ft (4,392 m), Mount Caldera forms the highest point on Pearl Island. The mountain is an active volcano, covering 100 sq mi (260 sq km). It was dormant when discovered by Cordero Saint Cloud during his pilgrimage centuries ago. It erupted the same year--completely demolishing its cone. An open dome of lava, vents, and fissures was left in its place. Presently, the dome averages one minor eruption every 23 hours. It is still considered a major world landmark.

Caldera’s mines are the number-one source of Chrysalene—the crystalline substance used for artificial PSI applications. Mining has revealed artifacts from an ancient necropolis. Because of the extreme heat, only the Atlas Academy's strongest pyrokinetics could even approach these ruins. These geologists were able to enter several chambers by moving stone tablets onto special markers. The caverns proved too hostile for deep exploration. For this reason, Caldera is the still the least-understood region of Pearl Island.

The Joint Enlisted Taskforce is a new multi-role strike force commissioned take on paranormal threats. After the Robot War 5 years ago, the base was built at the edge of Pearl Island's Prohibited Zone. It's part military base, part research lab, and part detention facility. The prison wing houses Dr. Edmund's most vicious co-conspirators. Due to Edgar's outstanding bravery, his friends were not prosecuted, but distrust still looms between JET and the Atlas Institute.

Their latest vehicles like the Ironclad Tank, Nightwing Bomber, and Bipedal "Golem" were specifically made to counter artificial psionics. The JET also runs smuggling interdiction ops for island safety. Local gangs have grown increasingly clever in using bio-enhancements to commit crimes. All signs currently point toward Atlas's Biotech division.
