As recent Sonic games have demonstrated, more than pretty graphics and a physics engine are needed to make a game. Good gameplay is needed. Good level design should be a priority at this stage. The best gameplay in the world can die without quality level design. I'm trying not to sound like I know more than everyone else here (and in fact it's probably the opposite) but after seeing so many failures with great concepts, smooth gameplay, but poor execution, it's just so frustrating!

Considering that, at this point, there's a running physics engine and a running bit of scroll code, and some graphics are being worked on, I can't help but notice the lack of focus on the fun factor. I'm not saying it's not fun, I'm just saying that it needs more than a test area. Don't get me wrong, having a physics engine and scroll code are great things, things that I couldn't have accomplished in my wildest dreams, but at the end of the day it will all go to waste if no one plays the game.

I just wanted to say that. Sorry if I've offended.

I'd say that you definitley have valid points. The levels are supposed to be based on the original genesis game though, so if you enjoyed it then chances are you will enjoy this too. This is also one of the many reason games are tested before they are released. If the testers don't like the way the game feels they can report this back to the author and changes can be made if necessary. There will be plenty of time to test and tweak things . I don't think you have anything to worry about in this case. =)

Just to clarify, the initial levels will be based on the original levels.

However, we are also going to later release an external level creator for all of you guys to come up with creative levels.

Our main priorities lie in actually establishing the base before going on.

Ah. I get it now. Thanks for snapping me out of my "depressed about lack of quality in video games" state. This one seems to have lasted longer than normal. But I'm good now, thanks for putting up with me.

However interesting a level editor may be, I've learned that it's very important to ship with a few good levels if you want to go anywhere.

[offtopic] If you are reffering to the gaming industry in general today I'd have to agree. In short; quality, story, funfactor and difficulty have been sacrificed for graphics and easier games meant to try to appeal more to the general masses.[/offtopic]
I know it is a ways off, but it'll be loads of fun to play with the level editor for this game. Laughing
