Aye, that's part of it, because it's a lot harder to make something that's truly self aware than simply make it seems intelligent.

@comicIDIOT: Interesting concept that computer sentience is restricted only by hardware and software. However, I think you're confusing intelligence/perception and sentience. Computers can indeed act more intelligent, more intuitive, even more prescient if programmed with good behavior pattern recognition and anticipation. However, no one would argue that any current computer system is sentient: ie, self-aware, capable of independent thought, and (in my opinion, one of the most important) capable of synthesis and creativity.
