I bought a fixed-temp 950° woodburner a few years ago, but didn't really use it at all. Since it's just been collecting dust, I figured I could put it to use by turning it into an adjustable-temperature soldering iron.
Thing is, I'm really not sure how I could do that... I guess I'd need to make a PWM circuit of some sort, but how would I get 120 volts through/out of that?
You could probably just run the power input through a variac for really primitive temperature control. Even something like a dimming lightswitch in-line would do the job, though you wouldn't have any kind of smart temperature control.
