I using a points system for alot of things on my new forums. The forum is just a project, but it seems like a good idea. It could be were the users get more capabilities/privilages. So say, you have a new TI program, and then you set a price, and a user can get it depending on the price. Use points of course, not real money.

I am using it on my forum. I have it right now were each user posts and gets a certain amount each post. Then they get to use the points to get tons of stuff. Like you can get your own forum and get sub-forums if you have alot of points(and I mean ALOT).

Check it out, and you can use it for all kinds of stuff too. Some forums I have heard used it like tokens .

And if Kerm can get the Shop to work(probably can)theres a shop owner function. So he could ever add that any user that is a frequent TI programmer can "sell" there programs for a forum price. He also has control over how much is the price limit so it does'nt get over that top.

Anyway, he needed everyones opinion before doing something like this. So what you say? Sound cool? Smile .
What's the point of buying software in an open source community? Confused
Your idea is like Socialism(sp?). It looks perfect on paper, but would never work out.

I think it takes the friendliness of the forum away. Kerm fixed my calc in an IRC room and then gave me this URL. He seemed friendly so I came here. Everyone else seemed friendly, so I stayed. If I would have came here and been forced to post a bunch just to download their programs, there's a good chance I would have left.
I have to agree with Ult. There is no point to getting points to buy programs that should be free. If I had a new TI program, I wouldn't restrict myself by letting only users on this forum with enough points get the program. I would release that program.
I must say that your opinions pretty much jive with my own. It's a cool idea, but put into use I don't think it would be practical.
yeah, I agree. Points would be interesting to have, but just as points. (and we have post counts to do that right now.)
I think between postcounts and wordcounts, we have enough to be competitive about already. Smile
true, how like Kerm has a post count almost 4 times that of anyone else.

Mwahahaha... none of you shall ever catch my postcount! Unless I took a leave of absense for some reason, of course.
that would be some major leave.
Indeed. And I don't plan on doing anything of the sort at any time in the forseeable future, so my status as top dog is safe for the moment. Smile

Selling open source software is not at all a new idea, and fits in quite well with the Free Software ideals. Look at Red Hat, which makes money and is publicly traded on the stock market. Having said that, why would anyone pay for something some kid threw together in his spare time, and why would that kid charge "forum points" anyway, I have no idea....
Precisement. Which is why I don't think I'll be installing this anytime soon. Case closed.
Ok so it was a bad idea Laughing . Thanks for the comments guys Smile .
Not a bad idea, just an idea that doesn't exactly suit this forum. Keep brainstorming!
